For Southmoore senior Ava Whiteman, playing outside hitter means accepting responsibility in the biggest moments.
As one of the SaberCats’ varsity volleyball players, Whiteman understands that her position requires much more than attacking the ball. Outside hitters are often asked to produce points when opponents are set defensively or when the offense needs a reliable option.
“I am an outside hitter, this position comes with a LOT of leadership and mental toughness, the hardest part is making sure you don’t get too emotional in a game, as an outside you are heavily relied on to score when it’s harder for your setter to use other hitters, so learning how to be consistent mentally is definitely something that takes time and effort to learn.”
Whiteman looks to Nebraska volleyball player Laney Choboy for an example of the competitive energy she admires.
“Someone who really inspires me would be Laney Choboy who plays for Nebraska volleyball, her relentless hustle and loud energy on the court is something that I’ve always admired.”
Team chemistry also matters to Whiteman. She praised libero Dacie Kersey for her dependable presence and ability to keep teammates encouraged.
“Dacie Kersey is somebody that you can always rely on, on and off the court. She’s got such a consistent positive energy, and you can always look to her when you need somebody to get you out of your head, me and all the other girls are very lucky to have her as our libero.”
Whiteman remains active beyond volleyball as a member of National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Moore Love and senior council. She is also a HOSA alumna.
After graduation, Whiteman plans to attend community college before continuing at Oklahoma State University to study veterinary medicine and become a doctor of veterinary medicine. Her focus, leadership and drive to improve continue to shape her final season with Southmoore volleyball.
