VYPE Magazine editor Brad Heath caught up with Southmoore Athletic Director Gregory George to discuss the upcoming school year and what his student-athletes can expect under his leadership.
VYPE: What high school did you graduate from and where did you start your coaching career?
George: I started my coaching career at Weatherford High School. I coached there for two years. I was very fortunate to meet the Roof family and learned a lot about coaching from that family. I graduated from Chickasha High School.
VYPE: This is a strange time in our lives. How do you feel your staff has done reacting and adjusting the COVID and how ready are you for things to return to normal?
George: COVID changed everything and did not change anything. In coaching you are always adjusting to changes and learning to adapt, so it was different but nothing we could not handle.
VYPE: What is the message to the student-athletes under your leadership?
George: I have always told kids to be a student first and be yourself, push yourself to new limits every day and never settle to be the same. You can always outwork your opponent if you work hard enough and want it enough.
VYPE: Do you have a mentor or someone you lean on when you have a situation or questions and are looking for answers?
George: When I was going to Chickasha High School, two men helped me more than they will ever know. Coach Ellis and coach McClain. I can never thank them enough.
VYPE: Let’s have some fun with these next few questions. Where is your favorite place to eat if you are going out for lunch or dinner?
George: My favorite lunch spot is J&W Grill, the fried onion burger.
VYPE: Do you have any hobbies?
George: Coaching and teaching young athletes is my passion and hobby. I also love to fish, deep sea, rivers, and ponds. All of it is great.
VYPE: Who is your favorite sports team?
George: My favorite sports team is Southmoore.
VYPE: What was the first concert you attended?
George: My first concert was Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
VYPE: What have you come to love most about Southmoore, its student-athletes and the community?
George: Southmoore is my home and I love the giving staff and atmosphere and the hard work all our teachers, and administration give every day. I am lucky to be around such great people. It makes me try harder each day. Southmoore is a giving and wonderful school.
