As new head coach Ashley Filer takes over at Southmoore High School, the focus is still the same; play sound ball, compete and earn a spot into post season play. Coach Filer is excited to build on the traditions built by those who came before her.

“Words cannot express how thankful, honored, and appreciative I am to be the next Head Fastpitch coach for Southmoore Sabercats. Coach Jeff Small and Coach Jason Lingo are Hall of Fame coaches on the campus at Southmoore High School, in my personal opinion. The tradition in Southmoore fastpitch and softball in general has been created because of those two gentlemen that created a significant legacy here at Southmoore,” coach Filer said. “Being the third coach of this program and the first female in a position to lead young ladies around the sport I fell in love with for a long time is not something I will ever take for granted. This role, position, and opportunity of a lifetime has truly answered my prayers. I am truly blessed and so fortunate to work side by side with the best assistants in the state. James Lingo, Keanni Strawn, and Bailey Whitmore have been by my side since I stepped on campus, and I could not be more thankful, excited, and hungry for our future for Southmoore Softball.”

Several players make their return to the lineup including Kandace Burnett (Sr.) who will play catcher and see time in the infield. Her experience behind the plate is crucial and her leadership will help this team throughout the season. When Burnett is not behind the plate, look for Kamille Jones (Fr.) to occupy that spot. Jones is an exciting young player who can play multiple positions including spots in the infield.

Kaylee Baxter (Jr.) is a great third baseman and equally amazing as an outfielder. With great speed and a high IQ, Baxter will take on a larger role this season as a leader and a major contributor to the overall success of the program. Playing next to Baxter is Lucely Kutz (So.) who started at shortstop as a freshman. Kutz plays great defense, has a rocket arm and continues to improve at the plate.

Two players will split time in the circle. Karissa Reddout (Sr.) and Kate Seaton (Jr.) bring their unique styles to the circle. Reddout brings playoff experience coupled with a good velocity while Seaton has good spin and movement on the ball. When she’s not pitching, Seaton is an excellent outfielder.

Expect great things from this team as coach Filer guides the ship into new waters for the Sabercat program.
