Coaches can play a major role in the lives of the athletes they coach. While they teach them how to play the game, they also serve as a role model and show them how to be good citizens and people. Southmoore slow pitch softball coach, James Lingo, says that coaches have played and still play a big role in his life.

“All my high school coaches were influential in my life,” Lingo said. “They taught me the right way to compete and act. I will always cherish my relationship with coach Jeff Small because he gave me my first job coaching softball which I will always appreciate. Lastly, coaching with my brother here at Southmoore is very impactful and something I will cherish long after my coaching career is over.”

Lingo is in his fourteenth season at Southmoore. Along with leading the slow pitch team, he is also an assistant coach for the fastpitch softball team. He says that he would not have made it this far without all those that he has met along the way.

“I love the lasting relationships that I have built with everyone involved,” he said. “Players, parents, coaches, administrators, umpires, press box crew, and support staff. Each and every one of them played a role or made an impact on me as a coach and as a person.”

One of Lingo’s players, sophomore Brylee Fanning, says that she is thankful for his leadership and willingness to help his players.

“Coach Lingo has been instrumental in my growth as a player since arriving at Southmoore,” she said. “But more importantly he’s had a massive impact on my growth as a person. He’s a very caring and passionate leader that truly cares for each of us girls. He makes the ups and downs of a long season easy and enjoyable.”

Throughout his career, James has had some great experiences with his teams, but he says the wins are always the best.

“Winning championships are always special,” he said. “Some of the best moments are going to an opponents’ home field or court and getting a victory. That definitely shows grit and toughness.”
